What is Lymphedema?
-
The lymphatic vessels carry fluid that has leaked into the tissues back into the veins. If this system is not working properly, the fluid collects in the tissues and is called lymphedema.
Find a Trained Lymphedema Therapist
-
Locate a fully certified therapist trained by the Dr. Vodder School in Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) and the Dr. Vodder method of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD®).
Lymphedema can be a bit complicated with some girls and women with TS. The current Clinical Practice Guideline for TS states that "The lymphedema seen at birth usually resolves by 2 years of age without therapy," however, lymphedema may occur or reoccur at any age and may be associated with the initiation of salt-retaining therapies such as growth hormone or estrogen.
Some children and adolescents may benefit from support stockings and elevation for treatment. There are no direct studies for lymphedema therapy (compressions and massage therapy) directly related to TS, but some girls and women have found success in these treatments. Therapists suggest that the earlier the intervention is started the better the results. If shoes are not fitting at all or fitting improperly, a consult with a lymphatic specialist may be beneficial.
